Ranofer is a young porter, orphaned and Egyptian boy, whose job was to prepare the ingots, and to always wonder what the destiny of each ingot was. Orphaned under the care of Gebu, his half brother, and stonecutter, Ranofer wished and pleaded that his father hadn't died. Because of Ranofer's young age, he was forced to follow Gebu's rules, which restricted being apprenticed.
The one person who Gebu and Ranofer shared a great dislike upon was Ibni. Ibni always gave Gebu wineskin as an unexpected present, even though Gebu never drank it.
Ranofer had been leaving work until Rekh noticed welts on his frail back, and Rekh was curious about who would beat such a puny and poor creature.
Rekh, the goldsmith, had said that small quantities of the gold had gone missing. Someone had been robbing the shop. One could have hidden a small ingot in their mouths, sandal straps, loafs of bread, or even wineskin! He asked most men of the shop and most said no. This made Ranofer's job of finding the culprit, difficult to fulfill. Ranofer suspected that it had been Ibni.

The Golden Goblet takes place in Ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians believed that afterlife was extremely important. That is why they built the pyramids, to make sure the kings and pharaohs had a safe place to be preserved. In order for a person's soul to live on, the body had to be preserved. Makeup was an important part of their culture, too. It was believed to have magical healing powers. It also was used to protect the face from sun.
Their language was in the family of Afro-Asiatic languages. It was also one of the first written languages, written with hieroglyphics on papyrus.
The geography was dry with little water. Egyptians said that there was red land, and black land. The black land was the fertile land on the banks. The Egyptians used that land for growing crops. The layer of rich, black silt made the land fertile. The red land was the desert that protected Egypt from neighboring countries that would try to invade.

"It is a humble wine, but of a good flavor. My wife makes herself, from our own dates. I know, snapped Ranofer, exasperated at hearing it for the fiftieth time." - Page 12. Ibni was bragging about how he had the money and the resources to make the wine himself, whereas Ranofer or someone at his social class wouldn't have said a word.

"Here, brush my table, and you lose not a grain of gold. I want the sweeping refined and poured again before the sun sets." - Page 13. Sata was barking all sorts of orders to Ranofer. It was like Ranofer was being treated like a slave.

"It was humiliating beyond measure to have attention called to those welts, lying across his back like the mark of a slave." - Page 16 Slaves were the lowest social class there was back then. Ranofer was comparing the way he was treated to a slave's.

Michael Summarizer:
At the beginning of the chapter told about where he lived and described the land. Later in the chapter Ranofer tried to accuse Gebu of being involved in stealing gold. Gebu claimed he never took any gold and didn't receive any from Ibni. Then, he beat Ranofer for accusing him. Ranofer also only got a piece of bread, the size of his palm. However Ranofer refuses to be involved in transporting the wine skins because he doesn't want to be a thief.

City of Thebes
The ancient City of Thebes, or also known as the City of the Dead, is located in the modern day, Egyptian city, Luxor. This city lies near the Nile river, allowing it to be very rich with resources. The city of Thebes is home to many great monuments that provided archaeologists to infer that Thebes was an advanced civilization. During the parts of the Middle and New Kingdom, Thebes was the capital of Egypt. It had been in great power and was home to many pharaohs scepters.

At the beginning of this chapter, Ranofer goes to weigh the gold and it's continuing to go missing. Later, Ranofer helps this boy who has no idea what he's doing and after seeing him help the boy, Hequet asked Ranofer to make the beads for necklaces which is a gigantic step up from where he was before so he's excited about it. After he doesn't bring Gebu the wineskin, he threatens Ranofer by making him his assistant to beat all day rather than making jewelry if he doesn't deliver them.

In this chapter we are informed that ranofer is well knowledged about gold making. Ranofer teaches Heqet and you can tell ranofer knows teqnikis. An important part of this chapter was when Ranofer tells Heqet about Gebu who is the gold steeler. Ranofer tells Heqet to tell Gebu that they know about him taking the gold. Heqet is a fairly new character and we are learning lots about him such as he has seven siblings and a small house. We learn more things about Ranofers Father specifically his grave Now you have been informed about chapter four in The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw

"In the sandy wasteland around him were the graves of the city's poor, each with an earthen jug or plate beside it holding the sundried remnants of a funerary offering." Page 62, Paragraph three. When the quote says the city's poor, it indicates social class. This shows Egypt believed in segregating the poor from the wealthy.
"Gebu had hired an indifferent sculptor whose price was cheap, and the result looked nothing like the Thutra Ranofer remember; but it was all he had." Page 63, Paragraph two. There one indicator was that there were sculptors (lower class, cheap prices.)
'Father will understand how hungry I was, he thought. Turning to the statue again rapidly, "Father, thank you. I am sorry I could not bring a better gift. Please, please come again.'" Page 63, Paragraph five. This gives to social class indicators. Firstly, he is starving so he had to eat off his father's sacred place, which shows how little food he had. If he were to be higher in class, he would have plenty food. Secondly, he could not bring a better gift because he didn't have the money.

Stern-
In ancient Egypt it is much more easier to get the death penalty than in today's, day and age. In the golden goblet chapter 5 people were executed by being hung and letting Vulcans tear you apart. They were killed because of robbing a tomb. You can also get the death penalty for other things like murder or sacrilege. In ancient Egypt things were very gruesome and lots of death, now I think it is much more civilized.

Ranofer suddenly collided with a fat man. When he was trying to see what was going on he was grabbed by the arm by the old man in the papyrus marsh. The man told Ranofer that men had robbed a tomb and they were to be hung by the leg upside down and eaten alive by vultures. Ranofer did not want to see what happened to the tomb robbers so he left to go home. The man walked slowly next to his donkey. Ranofer was asking the man questions like where he lives and what his job is then the man left. Ranofer thought he could live like the man, build a house, sell papyrus and then go to Rekh's gold shop. Then Rekh told Ranofer to go to Aba's potter and get a new crucible. While Ranofer was walking to Aba's potter he saw Ibni and panicked then hid in an alley until Ibni was gone. Then Ranofer said he should not be afraid because he did not do anything. Heqet told Rekh not Ranofer. When Ibni was gone, Ranofer went straight home. When Ranofer was at home he heard Gebu talking to Ibni and Gebu said he would not serve Ibni anymore. Then Ibni told Gebu to ask Ranofer, but Ranofer said he knew nothing. Then Ranofer left and saw half a loaf of bread, some onions and a jug of water. Ranofer heard Gebu say to Ibni to leave and never come back. Then Gebu told Ranofer that he will not return to Rekh's gold shop and he now works at the stonecutters shop. Ranofer begged to stay at Rekh's but Gebu just left. When Gebu came back home Ranofer told him that he would leave Gebu. He said he will build a home, sell papyrus for money and get a donkey for transportation. Gebu started laughing and then went upstairs to sleep. Ranofer was disappointed because his plan failed.

When Ranofer called Zahotep, "master" nervously and fearfully displayed that Ranofer was treated worse than dirt and was a much lower social class than Gebu and the others there in charge. Also, when Gebu and his most topped rank men went to work on the Great Temple, they were the top social class when the others that were not chosen to go were much lower.

Chapter Six Summary
Ranofer studies the art of stone cutting, and he does the dull job of filling holes with sand so Zahotep can drill holes in an alabaster slab. He also finds out that a simple slab of stone will be used as a lid for a tomb and he learns to sands granite. One night Gebu sneaks out of the house and Ranofer wonders why he would sneak out of the house at night when the "kefts" could be wandering. But then Gebu sneaking out becomes common and he learns to stop dwelling on that.

Sobek(God of Crocodiles)
Most myths say that he is a human with a Nile crocodile as a head. He serves to protect militaries and fertility. To most Egyptians, he is a key figures to their luck, and when one does wrong, as Ranofer thought he had been on page 116. Sobek can be seen turning into a crocodile on the banks of the Nile in the Old Kingdom. He is the God in which loves robbery, he who eats while he also mates, and he had the sharpest teeth. His fairness and fury wards off evil deities and spirits. Sobek's father and mother were Osiris and Isis, Sobek's name roughly translates to "he who united the dismembered limbs of Osiris."

In ancient Egypt, there was a vast variety of people and their wealth or lifestyle. For a reference in chapter seven is when Ranofer and Heqet talk about stone cutting and how it hurts your hands and being very time consuming. If you were very wealthy would would have other people or slaves to do the dirty work. I think this is important because it shows the different lifestyles in egypt.

In history goldsmiths have made silverware, goblets, weapons, and religious items out of gold. Gold is the only solid metal to be yellow in color. This made gold desirable. All cultures that had access to gold used gold even if they got imported to themselves. Gold is soft making it easy to "pressure weld". Clay is similar to gold because both can be easily fused together.

Grace- Researcher

Ranofer, Hequet, and the Ancient become spies. They begin spying on Gebu and his friends to see if there is any abnormal activity like stealing gold they don't find out anything by following them but they are going to continue to watch them until something happens. Ranofer watching Gebu, Hequet watching Wenamon, and the Ancient watching the river captain.
Allie-social class master

  1. On page 135, paragraph 2 it read, "Gebu came into the shop in the middle of the morning , snarled ill-naturedly at Pai and stalked about inspecting the work in a manner that caused every man to bend closer to his chisel or drill and all conversation to cease." The bolded portion of this quote shows higher social class in Gebu. If the workers are scared of doing wrong in front of someone in power, it shows they will be looked down upon. Showing social class between the workers.
  2. On page 137, paragraph 2 it reads," If only I could keep them, I could hide them away and use some to buy a donkey." All the bolded parts of this quote show that Ranofer is desperate for coppers and something to assist him with labor. If he were to be a king or one of higher class, he would have slaves, multiple donkeys, and plenty of copper. This shows how low he is ranked with social class.
  3. Also on page 137, paragraph 3, it reads that,"The sandals, the head cloths of fine linens--several of them--yes, and for some time Gebu had reeked of expensive ointments as well as barley beer." The bolded part of this quote indicates that Gebu has increasing social class. He is gaining more precious resources that one of lower class would not have access to.

In chapter 9 Ranofer and Heqet see how wealthy Gebu has gotten and they wonder if Gebu is the one that is stealing gold. Ranofer tried to get proof of Gebu steeling the gold. Ranofer was not able to find out if Gebu is steeling the gold .My hypothesis is Gebu is steeling the gold to get wealthy for himself and he might have saw Ranofer so he dident make a move
